Planning note
Events marked Free are community events with no registration fee. Paid events still offer ROI for machining shops — the per-head cost is low and the introductions are direct. The Camp Lejeune outreach in May is particularly accessible for small shops: it's at Coastal Carolina Community College, not on the installation, so no base access clearance required.

Camp Lejeune Small Business Outreach Conference
The premier Marine Corps small business outreach event on the East Coast. Contracting officers from Marine Corps Systems Command present upcoming requirements; primes post subcontracting opportunities. This is held at Coastal Carolina Community College — off-base, no access clearance required. Direct access to program managers you won't get at a trade show floor. If you're doing work for Fort Liberty, Camp Lejeune, or any Marine Corps ground system program, this is your event.

Aerospace Defense Americas (ADA)
Southeast-focused defense manufacturing conference bringing together primes, subcontractors, and government buyers for two days of matchmaking and program briefings. Aerospace Defense Americas has a strong North Carolina exhibitor base. Good for making prime introductions — the exhibitor floor is typically more active than the conference sessions. Plan to book a booth if you have a demo or sample parts; otherwise attend as a visitor.

Eastern Defense Summit
Multi-day defense summit with contracting briefings, panel discussions, and an exhibitor hall. Charleston has a heavy Navy presence (Naval Weapons Station, Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic), making this event valuable for shops targeting naval weapons systems, C4ISR programs, and shipyard support work. Navy contracting officers present at these events; the exhibitor hall is where the subcontracting discussions happen.

NC World Trade Association Annual Summit
North Carolina's largest international trade event. Three days of export/import programming, one-on-one matchmaking with international buyers, and sessions on exporting mechanics, financing, and logistics. For machining shops that want to explore defense exports (via ITAR-registered channels) or understand the international defense supply chain, this is a cost-effective entry point. Many Southeast primes attend to scout domestic suppliers — it's a prime-introduction opportunity disguised as a trade summit.

LOC-SMAC (Southeast Aerospace & Manufacturing Corridor) Events
LOC-SMAC runs a continuous calendar of regional events connecting aerospace and defense manufacturers across the Southeast corridor. Regular meetings, plant tours, and networking events — not just the big trade shows. Sign up for their mailing list to stay notified. These smaller gatherings are often more productive for a small machining shop than a trade show floor: one table at a LOC-SMAC lunch is more valuable than a booth at a 500-person expo.

NCMBC (NC Military Business Center) Event Calendar
NCMBC is the single best resource for North Carolina defense events — they track every small business outreach, contracting forum, and prime/subcontractor matchmaking event in the state. Their event calendar is the most up-to-date source for Camp Lejeune, Fort Liberty, Cherry Point, and all NC-based defense contracting events. Check ncmbc.us regularly for new postings throughout 2026.

NDIA Southeast Chapter Events
The National Defense Industrial Association runs local chapter events across the Southeast — panels, program briefings, and networking events with contracting officers and prime program managers. NDIA membership ($300–500/year) is worth it if you're doing defense work regularly; chapter events are accessible without being overwhelming, and the attendee list skews toward program management and engineering — the people who write RFQs and SOWs.

AUSA (Association of the US Army) Southeast Chapter Events
AUSA Southeast chapter events focus on Army ground systems, vehicle programs, and soldier systems — relevant if you're machining bracketry, structural components, or electronic enclosures for Army programs. Fort Liberty in Fayetteville is one of the largest Army installations on the East Coast; AUSA Southeast events are where the Fort Liberty contracting community gathers. If you're targeting Army work, these events are worth the time.

Design-2-Part Southeast (D2P)
Regional manufacturing show focused on precision machined parts, sheet metal, and fabricated components. D2P brings together buyers with active RFQs — it's a show for people who are buying, not just browsing. For a Charlotte-area machining shop, this is a local event with a regional draw. Quality of leads tends to be higher than the broad trade shows because attendees pay to get in.

NCDIA (NC Defense Industry Association) Events
The North Carolina Defense Industry Association is the state's primary defense industry advocacy group. Their events — quarterly meetings, advocacy days, and networking functions — are where NC defense manufacturers gather. The membership list is a buyer/seller network worth being part of if you're regularly doing work with primes or subcontracting with other NC shops. Check their event calendar on ncdia.org.

Southeast ITAR/DFARS Compliance Workshop
Two-day workshop focused on ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) and DFARS compliance requirements for defense subcontractors. Sessions cover export control classifications, DFARS 252.225-7009 (supplier flow-down), and NCAGE registration. Hands-on portion walks through SAM.gov entity registrations and basic ITAR classification questions. Particularly useful for shops that are ITAR-registered or pursuing registration — compliance gaps discovered early cost far less than a violation discovered by DDTC.

Southeast Operational Energy Conference (SOEIC) 2026
Annual energy-focused defense conference with sessions on logistics energy, tactical power systems, expeditionary infrastructure, and fuel efficiency. Defense contractors machining components for power generation, vehicle systems, or forward deployed equipment will find the technical sessions relevant. Strong attendance from Naval Energy and Army expeditionary programs — contracting officers for fuel systems and power hardware are regular presenters. Charleston location draws Navy program offices.

Fort Liberty (Fort Bragg) Industry Day 2026
Fort Liberty is one of the largest Army installations on the East Coast — home to XVIII Airborne Corps, US Army Special Operations Command (USASOC), and the 82nd Airborne Division. Industry Day brings the Fort Liberty Small Business Development Office together with prime contractors and subcontractors for a full day of capability briefings and one-on-one matchmaking. Machining shops with AS9100 or ISO 9001 certifications and any ITAR registration will get the most traction here.

AFCEA Tech Net Southeast 2026
AFCEA's flagship Southeast conference covers C4ISR, cyber, and IT modernization for defense and federal buyers. Sessions address communications systems, data networks, electronic warfare, and IT infrastructure — all of which require machined enclosures, brackets, and precision hardware. The small business track at Tech Net is well-developed; contracting officers from DoD and federal agencies attend specifically to meet small defense manufacturers. AFCEA membership ($150/year) gives access to all chapter events and the small business discount on conference registration.

Southeast Small Business Defense Contracting Summit 2026
Regional small business contracting summit bringing together SBA, PTACs, SDVOSB/VOSB certification workshops, and direct introductions to prime contractor sourcing managers. Full-day event with morning sessions on set-aside certifications, afternoon matchmaking with primes actively seeking subcontractors for defense programs. If you're still on the fence about pursuing SDVOSB certification or need help navigating the SDVOSB vetting process, this is the event to ask questions directly.

NCDITA (NC Defense Industrial Trade Alliance) Annual Conference 2026
North Carolina's defense industry trade association annual conference. Full day of program briefings, panel discussions, and networking with NC defense manufacturers and primes operating in the state. Topics typically include NC defense industrial base priorities, upcoming DoD requirements, workforce development, and NC-specific contracting opportunities. The membership list is worth the registration alone — it gives you the Rolodex of every NC defense shop and prime subcontracting manager in the state.

Defense Manufacturing Conference (DMC) 2026
The national defense manufacturing conference, hosted by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment (OUSD A&S). Three days of program briefings, manufacturing technology sessions, and prime subcontractor matchmaking. This is the most important national-level event for defense manufacturers — contracting officers from across all services present requirements, and primes announce upcoming subcontracting opportunities for the following year. Worth attending at least once; the exhibits hall alone is worth a full day.

Southeast Aerospace Precision Machining Expo (SAPME) 2026
Regional precision machining expo focused on aerospace and defense manufacturing. Sessions cover CNC programming for aerospace alloys, first article inspection requirements, AS9100 audit preparation, and CMMC compliance for defense shops. The exhibitor floor features tooling, software, and inspection equipment vendors — useful for shops evaluating new equipment or CAM software. The machining-specific content is more directly applicable than the broad defense conferences; plan to attend the technical sessions, not just the exhibit floor.
FEDTEX Defense Training Summit
Federally-focused contracting training and defense manufacturing events run throughout the year under the FEDTEX banner. Check fedtex.com for schedule updates. These events are particularly useful for small businesses navigating the federal contracting process — FAR/DFARS training, DUNS/NCAGE registration, SAM.gov setup, and proposal writing. Even if you have experience, a FEDTEX session on a specific topic (e.g., cost estimating for machined parts) can sharpen your proposal.
What a Machining Shop Gets From Attending
A shop owner might reasonably ask: Why spend a day at a supplier outreach when I could be running parts? Here's what showing up actually produces.
Direct access to contracting officers
A trade show floor gives you a conversation with a contracting officer or small business specialist who has budget authority. That's not available by email or phone. At a supplier day, you're in the same room.
Prime contractor introductions
Defense programs flow through primes. Meeting the subcontracting manager or supplier quality engineer at a prime — before they post on CapabilityList or SAM.gov — means you're in their consideration set before the competition starts.
SAM.gov registration and set-aside opportunities
Small Business Outreach events often include SAM.gov registration support and walk-throughs of the set-aside process. Getting your capabilities registered correctly affects which opportunities you even see.
Subcontracting pipeline visibility
Primes are required to post subcontracting opportunities for set-aside programs. At outreach events, you learn what the primes are actually buying, not just what's posted. The difference matters.
